In January, the UK government’s plan to phase out gas boilers has officially been scrapped.

The original plan was to ban the sale of new gas boilers by 2035, and reduce the possibilities of getting gas boilers repaired or serviced. This was all part of a plan to eliminate gas boilers and use environmentally friendly alternatives to reduce emissions.

However the new plan, as of the start of 2025, stated by the UK government’s ‘Future Homes Standard, says that new homes built after 2025 must use a low-carbon system when it comes to heating. Therefore - no gas boilers in new builds.

Instead of preventing the installations and repairs of gas boilers in a bid to eventually eliminate their use, the government have made a new decision to just reduce installations by 80%, by 2035. The updated plan indicates that ‘greener’ energy alternatives are to be encouraged, for example heat pumps, solar panels, and other electric options. While many people may find it ‘annoying’ that the plan has changed, it also means the UK can chase a more realistic goal towards meeting net zero. The governments aims to install 600,000 heat pumps by 2028, with the ‘Boiler Upgrade Scheme’ (BUS) being put in place to help achieve this. As a part of the BUS, the government is granting households in England and Wales with £7500 towards heat pumps, or £5000 towards biomass boilers. In order to redeem this, installers should apply for the grant, which will then be deducted from the cost of the installation for the property owner.

In 2022, 49,417 heat pumps were installed across the UK. And in 2023, 58,211 were installed. Therefore, we still have a way to go to meet the target of 600,000 per year.

On the other hand, there are still other options for those who want to swap to a more environmentally friendly alternative, but either aren’t a fan of heat pumps, or are one of the millions of homes that aren’t suitable to fit one:

• Solar water heating

• Hydrogen boilers

• Electric boilers

• Infrared heating panels

• Underfloor heating

• Electric radiators
