It doesn’t take a genius to realise that energy bills are on the increase and the pressure on the pound in your purse or the wonga in your wallet is increasing by the day.

The media is full of alarming stories about rising energy prices, be they gas or electricity and for some, there are real challenges ahead.

Advice ranges from using washing machines at certain times to take advantage of cheaper rates, to switching to LED bulbs and wearing electric gillets, versus hiking up the heating.

The nation’s best-known financial guru, Martin Lewis, has even created the new MSE Guide, featuring tips including heated gloves, hand warmers and even the good old electric blanket, while leaving the central heating off.

Here’s what Martin had to say on his website;

“This is a guide I really wish we needn’t be publishing. The reason I asked Sarah and the team to put this together is due to my overflowing e-mail bag of desperation from people who can’t afford their energy bills. So don’t see this as an ‘MSE or Martin says you should do this’.

“It’s more that we’re trying to help provide some options and information for those that may need to drastically cut down on energy usage due to financial desperation and some help for others who may want to do it out of a commitment to green issues.”

In the meantime, if you use electric radiators, make sure they are as efficient as possible.

With many electric radiators, all the heat that is radiated to the front of your room is also radiated to your back wall, on average around 40% (which is 40% of your electricity bills).

That is hugely wasteful!
