RTS Meters Swindon: What's Happening?
From 30th June 2025, a little-known system quietly running in the background of many UK homes will be switched off for good. If you’re using electric storage heating, panel heaters or an immersion heater, it could affect you.
What’s Changing?
The Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) is being shut down.
It’s an old piece of technology that ‘tells’ some electricity meters when to switch between peak and off-peak electricity rates, especially for those on Economy 7 and Economy 10, etc.
Once it’s turned off, your heating and hot water may stop working properly unless you upgrade your meter.
How Do I Know If I’m Affected?
You might be using RTS if:
-
You have electric storage heaters, panel heaters or a hot water tank
-
Your electricity meter has a separate switch box nearby labelled “Radio Teleswitch”
-
You’re on a time-based tariff like Economy 7
If you’re not sure, the safest thing to do is contact your energy supplier and ask!
What Do I Need to Do if I Have an RTS Meter?
If you have an RTS meter, it will need to be upgraded to a smart meter. Your provider should do this free of charge for you and will ensure that your heating remains working as normal once the RTS is switched off.
If you live in a privately owned or rented property, it’s best if you check with your provider about upgrading. Swindon Borough Council is contacting affected council tenants directly.
Why Do I Need to Upgrade My Meter?
Great question!
If you don’t upgrade your meter, you could face the following problems:
-
Your heating and hot water might not work as expected.
-
You could end up paying more for your electricity.
-
You may get inaccurate bills.
It’s a quick check that could save you a cold (and costly) surprise next winter.
